National Park Weerribben-Wieden

In 2009 with the merger of two unique nature parks, the National Park Weerribben-Wieden was created and thus the largest continuous fenland in North-West Europe. It is a landscape of more than 10,000 hectares, formed by peat extraction and natural disasters. Peat, won by the dredge haul holes also called “bog holes or” ward “was called to dry on narrow pieces of land, or ‘ribs’. By wide pull holes and narrow ribs could change the heavy northwesterly storms of 1776 and 1825 large areas in lakes; Wieden.

Another human intervention whatever form given to this natural area is the cultivation of cane. A fast-growing grass that provides an ever-changing landscape. Depending on the season you can see the reeds growing, mowing, be extended put on. More than three hundred watermills ensure in contrast to what is customary in the Netherlands that the water is not pumped out of the specific areas, but rather it.

Again, the nature takes the necessary maintenance. Regularly dredged, are part of swamp forests felled and waterfronts maintained in order to sustain the process of hydrosere and to ensure that the diversity of plant and animal remains.

The National Park Weerribben-Wieden in Overijssel is a wetland area where ponds, lakes, ditches and canals interspersed with extensive reedbeds, marsh forests and meadows full of flowers and with a diversity of plants including the rare quaking.

This unique nature attracts all kinds of birds and animals. The purple heron, black tern and warbler there are some. Among the mammals we see the fox and deer, but also has the otter since 2002 made its re-entry. In addition, the rare large copper in this area and a total of over three quarters of all Dutch dragonflies species.
